The CRO title is everywhere, but the role itself varies enormously from company to company. Before you start a CRO search, you need to be honest about what you actually need, and whether that's truly a CRO or something else.
Is CRO Actually the Right Title?
Many companies use "CRO" when they really mean "VP of Sales." The true CRO owns all revenue-generating functions, sales, marketing, customer success, and sometimes partnerships, and requires a different profile than a pure sales leader. Before you go to market, determine: is this person responsible for new logo acquisition only, or do they own the full revenue lifecycle?
The Four Types of CROs
- The Builder: First commercial leader, defining GTM from scratch. Needs founder orientation and scrappiness.
- The Scaler: Inheriting a working motion and scaling it from $10M to $50M ARR. Needs process rigor and team-building.
- The Fixer: Coming into a broken revenue org. Needs diagnostic ability, credibility with sales teams, and political capital.
- The Enterprise Expander: Moving upmarket from SMB/mid-market. Needs enterprise sales DNA and complex deal experience.
Why CRO Searches Fail
The most common reason CRO hires fail: the company hired a Builder when they needed a Scaler (or vice versa). The second most common: the CEO and CRO had misaligned expectations about the CRO's authority over marketing, headcount, and budget from day one. Both of these failure modes are entirely preventable with better upfront diligence.
CRO Compensation Benchmarks 2024
At Series A–B SaaS companies, total CRO compensation typically runs $250K–$400K OTE (base + variable) plus equity. At Series C+, total comp often reaches $350K–$600K OTE. Base-to-variable splits vary, but 60/40 base/variable is common at earlier stages; 50/50 or 55/45 is common at later stages.
The Reference Strategy That Surfaces the Truth
For CRO candidates, the most valuable reference conversations are with former direct reports, the AEs, SDRs, and CSMs who worked under them. Ask them: "Would you follow this person to another company?" The answer, and the quality of the answer, will tell you more than any interview question.
